Radon-222 concentrations in subsurface fluids may provide a means of locating a quantifying NAPL contamination in the subsurface. The method is based on radonis unique properties including: its production from the decay of radium-226 in subsurface materials, its radioactive decay with a half-life of 3.83 days, and its preferential partitioning

Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, according to EPA estimates. Overall, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Radon is responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year. It is estimated that a reduction of radon levels to below 2 pCi/L nationwide would likely reduce the yearly lung cancer deaths attributed to radon by 50%. However, even with an action level of 2.0 pCi/L, the cancer risk presented by radon gas is still hundreds of times greater than the risks allowed for carcinogens in our food and water. Radon-222 decays to a stable nucleus by a series of three alpha emissions and two beta emissions. What is the stable nucleus that is formed?

Abstract. Uranium-238 (238 U) is a natural radioactive element that is present in all rocks and soils in various concentrations.Decay of 238 U through a series of shorter-lived radionuclides eventually produces radium-226 (226 Ra), which has a half-life of 1620 years.

The radon-222 activity concentrations, which can be measured by this test method utilizing currently available gamma-ray instruments, range from a few becquerels per litre to several hundred thousand becquerels per litre for a 1 l test sample. This test method can …

Radon 222

Radon-222 is one of the decay products of uranium-238 (half-life 4.5 × 109 years) and radon-220, a nuclide thorium-232 decay (half-life 1.4 × 1010 years). Radon isotopes 222, 220 and 219 are radioactive gases produced by the disintegration of radium isotopes 226, 224 and 223, which are decay products of uranium-238, thorium-232 and uranium-235 respectively, and are all found in the earth’s crust. Radon-222 is similar to these isotopes: Actinium-225, Polonium-210, Plutonium-244 and more. The activity concentration of radon-222 in the atmosphere can be measured by spot, continuous and integrated measurement methods with active or passive air sampling (see ISO 11665-1).

Gasen bildas när det radioaktiva grundämnet radium sönderfaller. Det finns radon i mer eller mindre höga halter i alla hus. Radon-222 är den isotop som är vanligast.

Radon-222 decay chain . Radon (Rn) is an inert, radioactive gas which has several isotopes. The most important isotope in this experiment is 222 Rn, and belongs to the radioactive decay series starting with 238 U and ending 206 Pb, a stable lead isotope (see fig. 2.1). The other two isotopes that can be measured in this experiment, 220 Rn and 219 Rn, belong to different decay chains.
